China 2017  Dick and Salinda’s Blog

Wednesday, October 4

Our journey began with Uber. We had never used the service before, but were pleasantly surprised when the driver showed up on time.

We carried two large suitcases, a carry-on bag, and a handbag each. Our driver was able to squeeze the luggage and us into a Toyota.

Friday, October 6

After a very short night’s sleep we met family for lunch. This is what Chinese families do. Salinda and I are used to sharing a bowl of fruit for lunch. Family lunch is usually 8 or more dishes plus rice and soup.

The flight from San Jose took twelve hours. We arrived Thursday at 5:45 pm. Our nephew Dewey picked us up at PEK and took us home… Nanmofang.

Saturday, October 7

Salinda’s brother Ar Di arranged a special luncheon for us at the Jian Gua Hotel, the first international hotel in Beijing since the revolution. It is a buffet, but we were served additional items from a special menu by the Banquet Manager, Mr. Wu.

Sliced wild salmon, Beijing roast duck, and French Beaujolais wine. Does it get any better than this?

Salinda enjoyed the Beaujolais with BBQ shrimp… at noon

Sunday, October 8

Another day, another family banquet. It was a happy reunion with my friend Ting Ting.

Reunion with Dewey Du and Lucy. We met years ago when Dewey  managed Economic Development for the PRC. He has since become a national TV commentator on economics. A runner, Dewey ran the San Jose Rock and Roll Marathon in 2016.

Tuesday, October 10

We rested Monday morning getting used to the time change. Tuesday we headed out to take care of cellphone and banking business.
